And there he met a simple widow
Who was weeping on her way.
"What news? What news?" said Robin Hood,
"You are weeping - tell me why."
Said she, "My sons in Nottingham town
This day are condemned to die."

Straight to the castle Robin went,
With a link and a down and a day,
But at the gate the Sheriff's guards
With lances barred his way.
"Pray, let me pass," bold Robin said,
"For the sake of all that's good!"
But one guard said, shaking his head,
"You look like Robin Hood!"
